Puzzle Piece

In January of 2005, the City of Alexandria released its first Alexandria Community Health Assessment.  The Alexandria Health Department, along with the Alexandria Public Health Advisory Commission and other community partners, began conducting a Community Health Assessment in 2002.

A Community Health Assessment has been defined by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) as "a broad-based, documented, and collaborative process conducted with community participation that produces a list of community health priorities and resources.” The goals of the Community Health Assessment were to identify and effectively prioritize health issues in the Alexandria community.  This document reports on different focus areas of Alexandria residents’ health, including maternal and child health, behavioral and mental health, injury and violence, chronic diseases and infectious diseases.

Based on the collection of existing data and telephone surveys of Alexandria residents, the Community Health Assessment Steering Committee established a priority list for action. The health priorities were:

  • Obesity
  • Tobacco Use
  • Substance Abuse/Mental Health
  • Influenza
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Teen Pregnancy and HIV/AIDS (tie)
  • Breast Cancer and Colorectal Cancer (tie)
  • Severe Accidents / Injuries
  • Tuberculosis

While Alexandria residents are relatively healthy overall, there is definitely room for improvement. In response to the health assessment, a Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria was created in 2006 to improve a select number of health issues through coalition building, collaborative planning and community action.

In 2007, a Community Environmental Health Assessment of Alexandria was conducted by the Health Department’s Environmental Health Division.  This data has been used to supplement the work that was already underway with the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria.
Four work groups have been formed to address priority issues identified by the Partnership:
