Youth Mentoring & Development Programs

Young Stars Success Program (YSSP)

Description

Dr. Lawrence Jointer, ACPS Director of Pupil Services, began this program in 2001 to address the need to increase the possibility of high school success for young men and to reduce/eliminate school suspensions. The mission is to create and foster a cadre of academically and socially successful young males to serve as role models in the community. Students and mentors meet twice monthly for tutoring, support, social activities and field trips.  Students may contact mentors at any time for support. Every year, YSSP participants have raised their Grade Point Averages. They have also been more likely to stay in school than youth who were at risk of dropping out and/or expulsion and who were not in YSSP.

Space of Her Own Program (SOHO)

Description

After a week of rapport-building, girls are matched with adult female mentors who work with them complete art and design classes, creating hope chests, personalized thrones, lamp shades, floor cloths, face masks, etc.  The program is loosely based on the popular television show, “Trading Spaces”.  Upon completion of the art course work, girls and mentors work on teams to remodel each other’s personal space in the home, being sure to include ample lighting and study space.  The promise of gorgeous new bedrooms is what hooks girls in, promoting near-perfect program attendance. Homework support, life skills, sex education/refusal skills and communication and anger management classes are infused throughout every program day.  George Washington Middle School Teacher, Amy Cable, provides additional school-based SOHO Sisterhood club meeting for the girls and follow-up activities for SOHO graduates.
