Mental Health/Substance Abuse Work Group

  • September 20, 2008 – Family Fun Day
  • June 26, 2008 – Youth Depression & Suicide Prevention: How to Keep Our Kids Safe, training targeted to schools and Health Dept. staff, provided by Mary Azoy, CrisisLink.  Location: Beatley Library, 10 a.m.
  • June 2008 – The Alexandria Times and the Alexandria Gazette Packet print op-ed piece by SAPCA Chair, Allen Lomax, "Prom, Graduation and Beach Week: Rite or Risk.”
  • June 2008 – TC Williams High School hosted a Teen Driving Assembly and the Alexandria Police Department increased DWI enforcement and education efforts.
  • May 29, 2008 – Personal and Professional Perspectives on Depression, featuring Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D., one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive illness.  Location: Minnie Howard Ninth Grade Center, 3801 West Braddock Road from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • May 23, 2008 – City Employee Health Fair. Location: Lee Center  
  • May 2008 – Tricia Bassing represented SAPCA at week 3 of CADCA’s National Coalition Academy at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA.  This week included orientation to an online system to measure coalition outcomes.
  • May 12, 2008 – The Inner World of a Suicidal Youth: What Every Parent & Health Professional Should Know, featuring by Millie Osborne, MD, author of book by the same title. Location: Beatley Library, 5005 Duke Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • May 8, 2008 – “The High Cost of Stigma” article printed by Alexandria Gazette and letter to the editor addressing mental health stigma printed by the Alexandria Times.
  • April 18, 2008 – Suicide and Self-Injurious Behaviors, presentation by Dr. Nichole Rohrer, Community Services Board, and Rebecca Burman, Dominion Hospital, for “Ladies Night Out” Alexandria Youth Pastor Network event for teen girls.  Location: First Baptist Church, King St.
  • April 2008 – SAPCA (via the Community Services Board and a competitive bidding process) selected Dr. Jerome Short of George Mason University to guide, analyze, and facilitate qualitative assessment activities outlined in the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Coalition Building grant.  Grant activities thus far have included: establishing online survey, focus group and structured key informant interview protocols; hosting eight focus groups, releasing a series of online surveys to the community, and conducting key informant structured interviews.
  • Spring 2008 - Distribution of Anti-Stigma Materials to schools, recreation centers, community organizations and faith community youth groups
  • March 2008 – SAPCA (via the CSB) was awarded a $14,400 DMHMRSAS Coalition Building grant to fund qualitative assessment activities in Alexandria.
  • March  2008 – SAPCA staffed a table at the Schools & Community Educational Forum.
  • March 2008 – SAPCA applied for a $602,930 5-year SAMHSA Drug Free Communities grant, for which the CSB would be the fiscal agent.
  • Ongoing – Website of youth speaking of their experiences with mental health issues, www.nostigma.org,  posted on Blackboard on students’ laptops at T.C. Williams.
